Buying online vs from a local shop — the honest comparison
"It's Rs. 2,000 cheaper on Daraz." We hear it weekly. Sometimes online really is cheaper. Sometimes the real cost is double once you add up everything. Here's a fair, no-spin comparison from a local shop owner.
I'll tell you upfront: I run a local shop, so I have a bias. I'll try to keep it honest. The short version is — online makes sense for some categories, local makes sense for others. The trick is knowing which is which before you click "Buy".
Where online genuinely wins
Small electronics under Rs. 5,000
Earphones, power banks, USB cables, small accessories. The online marketplaces have a huge selection and prices we genuinely can't match because of the volume they buy in. If your headset breaks, ordering a new pair on Daraz is fine — easy returns, low stakes.
Niche items we don't stock
If you want a specific obscure brand or model we don't carry, online wins by default. We're a 16-product shop right now, not a 16,000-product warehouse. There's no shame in saying "if we don't have it, get it online".
If you live far from any showroom
Customers in remote VDCs of Kailali, Bardiya, or further into Mahakali — the cost of travelling to Lamki for a one-time purchase + delivery back can outweigh the online premium. Local shops in your area might not exist.
Where online quietly loses (the parts they don't advertise)
The "free delivery" isn't free for appliances
Phones and accessories ship free easily. Refrigerators and washing machines? Most online platforms charge Rs. 1,500–3,500 for "delivery service" — sometimes hidden inside the price, sometimes added at checkout. Compare the final delivered price, not the listing price.
Installation is your problem
Online sellers drop the box at your gate. After that:
- AC: You hire a technician (Rs. 3,000–5,000), provide the copper piping (Rs. 2,500+), buy mounting brackets (Rs. 800), test for refrigerant leaks yourself.
- Washing machine: You connect the inlet hose, drain, and test cycles. Hope you get the right size for your tap.
- Fridge: Less complex, but if it arrives damaged you're calling customer support, not the shop.
At our shop, every appliance includes free installation by our own team. We test it before we leave. We come back if anything's wrong.
Warranty claims become your full-time job
This is the big one. When your online-purchased fridge stops cooling after 6 months, you have to:
- Find the manufacturer service centre yourself (often Kathmandu / Bhairahawa for some brands)
- Pack and ship the appliance back at your expense
- Wait 2–4 weeks for it to be assessed
- Hope the warranty is honoured (they often dispute "transit damage" claims)
When you buy from us, you call us. We pick it up from your home. We deal with LG / Samsung / Whirlpool directly. You're without the appliance for 3–7 days at most, not weeks.
Returns are theoretically simple, practically painful
"7-day return policy" on a 50 kg refrigerator means you pack a 50 kg box yourself and arrange a pickup that may or may not show up. Most customers give up and keep an appliance they're unhappy with. Returns at a local shop are face-to-face conversations that get resolved.
You're trusting photos
Online listings use stock photos that may not match the actual unit you receive. We've had customers walk in showing us photos of dents, scratches, and wrong-coloured units that arrived online. With us, you see the actual unit before delivery — or come to the showroom and check it yourself.
The real total-cost comparison
Let's compare an LG 1.5 ton inverter AC across both channels:
| Cost | Online | Our shop |
|---|---|---|
| Listed price | Rs. 56,500 | Rs. 58,000 |
| Delivery to Lamki | Rs. 2,500 | Free (within 10 km) |
| Installation | Rs. 3,500 (you arrange) | Free (same day, by our team) |
| Copper pipe + brackets | Rs. 3,000 (extra cost) | Included |
| Stabilizer (if needed) | Rs. 5,500 (figure it out yourself) | We assess voltage, recommend if needed |
| Warranty handling effort | Yours, for 10 years | Ours, for 10 years |
| If it arrives damaged | Your problem (return shipping, wait) | Replaced same day |
| Total upfront | Rs. 65,500–71,000 | Rs. 58,000 |
That listed-price gap of Rs. 1,500 turns into a real-cost gap of Rs. 7,500–13,000 in our favour, plus 10 years of warranty support. This is the maths most customers don't run.
When you should buy online (without me being defensive)
When you should buy local (and feel good about it)
How we try to deserve your local purchase
We're not asking for charity — we're asking to earn it. Here's what we do that an online seller can't:
- You can come and see the actual unit before you buy. Try the door, listen to the compressor, feel the build quality.
- Free 10 km delivery + same-day installation by our own team.
- 10-year warranty handled by us — call us, we'll come. No service-centre hunting.
- EMI we walk you through, not a form you fill in alone.
- Honest recommendations — including telling you "this product isn't right for you, try the cheaper one instead". Hard to do when you're an online algorithm.
