How to Choose the Right AC for Your Home in Lamki

Picking an AC isn't just about the price tag. Tonnage, inverter vs non-inverter, star rating, and your room size all matter. Here's exactly how to choose — explained for Kailali's climate by people who install them every week.

Every summer, the same question comes through the shop: "Netra ji, kun AC kinne ho?" (Which AC should I buy?) The honest answer is that no single AC is "best" — it depends on your room, your budget, and how often you'll actually run it. This guide walks you through everything we ask customers before recommending an AC.

1. Start with your room size — this decides the tonnage

The most important number is tonnage — how much cooling power the AC produces. Picking the wrong tonnage is the most common mistake we see, and it costs you money two ways: too small means it runs constantly and barely cools; too large means you pay for cooling you don't need.

Here's a rough sizing chart based on Kailali's hot climate (don't use generic charts made for Kathmandu — we're hotter):

  • Up to 100 sq ft (small bedroom): 1 Ton AC
  • 100–150 sq ft (standard bedroom): 1.5 Ton AC
  • 150–200 sq ft (large bedroom or small living room): 1.5 to 2 Ton AC
  • 200–300 sq ft (large living room, shop): 2 Ton AC

If your room gets direct afternoon sun, add 0.5 ton to whatever the chart suggests. Same if you have a tin roof — Kailali summers turn those into ovens by 2 PM.

2. Inverter or non-inverter — which one's right for you?

This is the second-most-asked question, and honestly, in 2026 there's almost no reason to buy non-inverter except to save money upfront. Here's the simple difference:

Non-inverter ACs run at full speed until the room is cold, then shut off completely. Then they restart at full speed again. This start-stop pattern uses more electricity and is harder on the compressor.

Inverter ACs slow down once the room is cold and just maintain temperature. They use 30–40% less electricity over a season, run quieter, and last longer.

Real math from a Lamki home

A 1.5 ton inverter AC costs around Rs. 8,000–10,000 more than a non-inverter. Over a year of running 6 hours/day in summer, the inverter saves around Rs. 4,000–5,000 in electricity. So it pays for itself in 2 summers and saves you money every year after that. No-brainer.

3. Star ratings — don't overthink, just go higher

Star ratings tell you how energy-efficient the AC is. 1 star is the least efficient; 5 star is the most. Higher star = lower electricity bill.

For Kailali, where you'll likely run the AC many hours a day in summer, we always recommend 3-star minimum, ideally 5-star. The price difference is small but the electricity savings add up fast.

4. The features that actually matter (and the ones that don't)

AC brochures are full of fancy-sounding features. Here's what's worth caring about, and what's mostly marketing:

Features that actually matter:

  • Copper condenser — lasts longer than aluminium in humid weather. Always insist on copper.
  • Anti-corrosion coating — important for our climate, where dust and humidity attack the outdoor unit.
  • Stabilizer-free operation — handles voltage swings on its own, which means one less thing to buy and worry about during load-shedding.
  • Quiet mode — actually matters if it's a bedroom AC.

Features you can mostly ignore:

  • "Self-cleaning" filters — useful but not essential.
  • "AI mode" — usually a fancy name for the basic auto mode.
  • WiFi / smart features — fun once, useless after a week.
  • Color displays on the indoor unit — looks nice but doesn't cool any better.

5. Installation is half the job — choose the seller carefully

Here's something most customers don't realise: a good AC badly installed will cool worse than a cheap AC installed properly. Bad installation causes refrigerant leaks, vibration noise, water dripping inside, and shortened compressor life.

When you buy from us at New NP Electronics, our team does the installation themselves — we don't sub-contract. That means proper bracket mounting, correct refrigerant pressure, clean copper pipe flaring, and tested cooling before we leave. Free across Lamki, Tikapur, Dhangadhi, and surrounding areas.

6. Brand recommendations for Lamki

We stock LG, Samsung, and Sensei air conditioners, and we recommend them for different reasons:

  • LG Dual Inverter — our top pick for quality and 10-year compressor warranty. Best for customers who'll use the AC heavily and want the longest service life.
  • Samsung Wind-Free — strong feature set, good for households where noise matters (bedrooms, study rooms).
  • Sensei Inverter — best value for money. Reliable, affordable, with proper warranty support through us.

Final checklist before you buy

  • ✓ Right tonnage for your room (use chart above)
  • ✓ Inverter, not fixed-speed
  • ✓ 3-star or higher rating
  • ✓ Copper condenser, anti-corrosion coating
  • ✓ Stabilizer-free operation
  • ✓ Reputable brand with local warranty support
  • ✓ Seller who handles installation themselves
